"Joyce is a proud parent of four children in Bellevue, two of which are                                    in the Mandarin Dual Language program. Joyce values multilingualism and                          multiculturalism. She started the “Purple School” for developing and
supporting bilingual education. She is a strong supporter of inclusive                                    classrooms and her focus as a school board  director will be on meeting the                        diversity of children’s needs. As a  speaker of Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and                  Spanish, she propose to host listening sessions for families, students,                                  educators, and community members who speak languages other than English                    to get multiple perspectives."

Joyce is deeply committed to                     bringing greater responsiveness to diversity in the Bellevue Public Schools.                         Additionally, she will bring a welcome sensibility and perspective to the work                     of the Bellevue School Board."

"The students and staff in Bellevue School District are in desperate need of                          healing. The past year has been filled with trauma that we've had no space to                    address. New leadership is essential to allow our staff, our students, and our                      community to recover. Joyce Shui is the only candidate in this race that                              educators trust to make Bellevue a place where staff and students are truly                        cared for."
  • Valorri Rabitoy, Bellevue, Bellevue School District educator
  • Lane Lopus, Seattle, Bellevue School District educator
  • Eve Chan, Bellevue, Bellevue School District educator
"I give my endorsement and fervent support to Joyce Shui as the viable                               candidate for Bellevue School District board director, for the position in                               district 3. I've had the honor of collaborating with Joyce on many occasions                       and can attest to her willingness to listen, understand, value, appreciate,                             support, and "carry stories forward". As a multilingual/cultural BIPOC myself, I                   value Joyce's lived experiences as a multilingual BIPOC and raising her children                   with the similar outstanding principles. Joyce provides the care and vision that                   we need to move our educators, students, families, and community members                     forward."

There will be (and are) complex issues when we return to our buildings in the                     fall, Joyce can help support us with the healing process and bring a unique                         outlook that will move us toward being that amazing school district we are                       capable of being."
  • Melinda Pederson, Bothell, Bellevue School District educator

  • Tamara Truax, Shoreline, Bellevue School District educator
"This past year and a half have been challenging for students, families,                                  educators, and staff in the BSD. The uncertainties, tensions, and erosion of                        trust over this period mean that we need to come together in true                                        partnership. Joyce Shui has the experience, strength, and compassion to                              move the healing forward to forge an equitable and ambitious district."
  • Chelsea Kearns, Seattle, Bellevue School District counselor
  • Abigail Horsfall, Bellevue, Bellevue School District educator

She has                                         demonstrated a commitment to our District's work toward equity and                                 inclusion, and truly understands what it will take for us to move forward                             collaboratively on behalf of ALL students so they may continue to learn and                       thrive as creators of their future world."
  • Michelle Salgado, PhD, Bellevue, WA
"The community of students, families, and educators in Bellevue deserve to                          have a school community led by caring, ambitious, and equity minded                                  individuals such as Joyce Shui. Professionally and personally, Joyce has the                          experience and knowledge to support our school community and help to lead                    BSD toward excellence. I have worked in education for over twenty years as                      both a teacher and educational researcher. As a expert in the field of public                        education and a parent I fully endorse Joyce Shui and the platform that she is                    running on which is best suited to support all children, families, and educators                    in Bellevue School District."

  • Audrey Jia, Boston, MA
"This is Audrey from the Metro Boston, Massachusetts. I’ve known and met                          Joyce in the mid 1980s, when she was a student at Harvard University. I was                      was a new arrival refugee from Cambodia living in a relatively high risk                                community. Joyce was a student volunteer who came into my and my sister’s                    life just at the right time. We were not only struggling with learning a new                          language, but with new acculturation, assimilation, and prejudice and racism.                      Joyce was a god sent. She was a big part of our lives. She was not just a                              student volunteer, she was a big sister, she guided us through that tough                            time with sincere love, caring, and friendship. She had the best interest in our                    wellness. She took us out for social recreational activities along the Harvard                      yard and campus and the school community in Cambridge Massachusetts.                          After Harvard University she would continue to stay in contact with us, sent                      us letter. Both my sister and I were and are very inspired by her. We follow                          her path and love for education. My younger sister a graduated with a degree                    in Biochemistry who’ve done well, currently living in Germany- moving with                      her husband’s who hold a position as Deputy Chief Commander for the U.S                        government office, and I completely my graduate program in Clinical Social                        Work at Boston University and completed a Community Fellowship program                      at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Urban                      Study and Community Planning, as well as Clinical Certification training                              program at Boston College. Joyce has always have a big influence on my                            academic career and ambition. I am so proud to learned she is running for                          School Board with a Campaign Platform on Excellence, Equity, and Empathy.                      Joyce representing all of these and I believe she will be able to make a huge                        contribution to the board."

"When we moved to the US 6 years ago, my employer gave me the freedom to                   choose where to live as long as it was in the continental US. I made a model                       with public data on many variables, including education, opportunities,                               diversity, and other essential factors for our children. And Bellevue was                               consistently among the top places. So we moved here, with three kids, one on                   each school level (NHE, Tyee, NHS). After two years, we decided to stay in the                   US and bought a house two blocks from our rental in Newport Hills. We made                   a massive sacrifice so our kids would stay in their schools.
I'm very concerned with what I'm seeing from some candidates. We are                               Hispanic immigrants and are worried that a candidate believes my children are                   intellectually disadvantaged due to their race. Joyce is a good option against                     that and a fantastic candidate with an impeccable background on her own.
We are not citizens, so we can't vote. But we are permanent residents now, so                   we can legally support and endorse Joyce Shui."

"I remember as a young child, taking a picture of my sister with a polaroid                           camera on the day that she ran back from the mailbox giddy with                                         anticipation.  She said "it's a thick envelope! that's a good sign!" Seconds later,                   we were on our back deck taking a picture of a glowing 17 year old who had                       just learned that Harvard accepted her! It is a fond childhood memory of mine                   taking the photo, feeling Joyce's excitement. As her little sister, I would be so                     proud to wear the Harvard t-shirts she would come to buy me over the years.                   Now, as a Mom of 4, as I think a lot of my own young kids' future education, I                   asked Joyce a few yrs ago, "Do you think every child has the ability to get                           straight As?" Could everyone have the potential to be "Harvard material." I                         clearly remember Joyce saying very thoughtfully, "Yes, I really do believe that.                   Not everyone would believe that, but it's about access and guiding these                             kids...It may be easier for some than others to get there, but I believe that                         every child can excel and get straight A's given the right tools." Inspiring, from                   my big sista!"

"My husband and I met Joyce through Jing Mei Elementary, and we were                              impressed with her passion for enriching the lives of children through                                  language education and cultural programs with her Purple School. Our                                daughter has been a student at The Purple School for the last 7 years and has                    enjoyed a mix of classes in Mandarin, Spanish, and Japanese. Through Jing                          Mei projects over the years and especially when our girls participated in a                          coordinated dance ensemble for the school’s talent show, I witnessed Joyce’s                    natural ability to lead and inspire the girls to perform at their best. Joyce is the only choice for this                   position!"
