About Joyce
"It’s important to listen with open hearts and open minds, especially when what we hear doesn’t immediately resonate. Those moments are opportunities to deepen our understanding of each other and better our schools and community." -- Joyce Shui
Joyce Shui is a mother of four children and an attorney, small business owner, educator, and child advocate. A graduate of Harvard University (A.B.) and New York University (J.D.) and a resident of Washington state for 25+ years, Joyce started her career as a judicial law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Robert F. Utter. Justice Utter’s humanity aligned with Joyce’s vision of kindness and excellence for our local communities and for the world. Joyce’s legal career includes working at K&L Gates (where she represented Microsoft in mergers and acquisitions and software licensing) and serving as General Counsel for local companies like Avanade and Edifecs. She now serves as lead senior legal counsel for SAP, the third largest software company in the world. Joyce has served on the boards of the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association, Washington Women Lawyers, and the American Lung Association of Washington and also volunteered as a neighborhood legal clinic volunteer attorney in the International District, providing free legal services to low-income community members. As the founder and owner of The Purple School, Joyce has realized her passion for children and education by providing language immersion experiences in ten languages. She also writes a “tech tips” column at work, is a STEM proponent, and loves languages, music, and the arts. In high school, she played the marimba including at the state level, piano, and flute, and she now enjoys learning the ukulele. Joyce is committed to the academic needs of all students. As the parent of children who have benefited from Bellevue’s gifted (Advanced Learning) and language immersion programs, as well as from individualized education plan (IEP) services, Joyce has personally experienced the need for a wide range of supports and the importance of hearing from a wide range of perspectives. Addressing the needs of all children will ensure the continued excellence of Bellevue School District. Joyce supports transparent leadership and community involvement in board decisions, while supporting educators and staff. As our community moves out of the pandemic, Joyce believes it is time to come together to continue Bellevue’s tradition of excellence and student success.
